I am hopeless, as I have revealed in my reviews on several occasions, at DIY and woodworking in particular. I can destroy a piece of wood in seconds. Trouble was with my hobby of building hardwood cases for battleships I needed wood that was straight and true and then finished to perfection! I realised this was a tall order and sadly one mistake soon compounds the next. Thus if the wood is not straight and true to begin with then the router will wander and the nice smooth routed edge that was planned in my mind’s eye was now more a wiggly banana shape. It struck me that I just had to man up. Starting with precisely machined woods from a respected supplier was a good start and then good tools.I was hoping that there would be some machine or other that would help me and in fact I have one of those saws that sits in a frame and will rotate round to create angles for mitres and things – the only problem was the 90 degree angle was not straight! I then thought about a powered mitre saw but one has to spend silly money to get one that will be accurate enough and then of course I worried about that blade ripping into and out of the wood. This little saw is fabulous. It has a lovely weight and feel to it , especially for a weedy chap like me. It cuts precisely and cleanly and if one marks the wood properly, begins the right on the mark made by a nice set square and then keeps it straight and true – then with practise excellent results are obtained. In particular nice clean cuts are made given just a little care.Courtesy of this lovely saw set at a compelling price point , then even I can now saw accurately across some lovely sections of wood. Please see a couple of photos of some 33mm solid oak. No joiner should be without one !

I always try to go for Spear and Jackson, it kind of takes the mystery out of buying. Like going to M&S for food, you know you will get a quality product.Ok this is a hand saw basically, not much you can say about it, but it cuts like a hot knife through butter, an easy cut too, with little force or pressure needed. Nicely packed with a cardboard sleeve which I suggest you keep on when not in use so when in your toolbox it doesn’t suffer damage to the teeth. So very well please, top marks, and a world of difference between cheaper brands and this one. With tools I think you do get what you pay for.

Great little buy, Ideal for woodworking hobbyist, there are better ones on the market but if money is tight I can recommend this saw, it does what I need it to and it gives a clean cut, as for longevity only time will tell.

I chose this partly because of the Spear & Jackson name and partly based on others’ recommendations, specifically about this saw but also about saws of this type – some professional versions of which can cost several hundreds of pounds! I needed to reduce the length of an IKEA veneer and particle board self-assembly bed. I’m happy to say that the Predator was of high enough quality that, pre-scoring the wood with a knife, I was able to achieve clean, chip-free cuts with it that are almost indistinguishable from those elsewhere on the bed as supplied by IKEA. Highly recommended.
