It requires a bit of touch-up before being ready to use. Faithfull probably kept the price low by cutting a few corners (e.g. the finish) but the building quality is very good, i.e. it’s hefty & reassuringly solid piece of metal. Can’t see it break unless you are the kind of guy who is sensitive to kryptonite. When it arrived, the mouth was definitely not straight (off by ~1mm on the left side) but that was quickly rectified with a nail file and a straight edge. The blade sharpness was ok-ish, but any sane person who is planning to use sharp tools knows that sharp edges don’t last forever anyway, i.e. that is not a fair point for quality assessment and you should get a whetstone anyway. The sole was flat without the blade and slightly concave with the blade on, but this is a general problem of metal planes and not a build-related issue. Simply put, metal has a finite rigidity, therefore tightening the two screws that hold the blade and the mouth adjustment piece produces two small concavities right under the portion of the body where the threads are located. It’s not visible to the naked eye but it shows very clearly when flattening the sole on a flat surface. Simple solution: flatten it with the blade on. And I am not even sure the deformation would be big enough to impact performance.Bottom line: this tool _does_ need tuning, but once you get over that, it worksvery well. At this price point it would be truly unfair to expect perfect functionality out-of-the-box. In the end I cut take paper-thin and consistent shavings, and that is all that truly matters.

I was aprehensive of buying something that was so much cheaper than its better known rivals, but this is a first class plane. I have used it on softwoods and hardwoods and find its performance second to none that I’ve used before. The blade did require a short hone to get it really razor sharp. I love the fine adjustments on this plane, so easy and quick to set. You may notice it is quite heavy, I don’t know, maybe should have been made of steel instead of iron, but that doesn’t affect its performance. The plane also comes in a very nice green felt lined wooden box. I’m so glad I didn’t waste money on a plane that was three times the price, because there’s really no need to, it is very well made. And let’s face it, you don’t get bargains like this every day!

First block plane and I’m very happy. Just wish I’d bought this for the 3 other doors I trimmed down with a rasp. Did the job with ease, took me about 20 mins to trim 2 doors to fit and they are very smooth and close nicely now. Blade good quality with no chips as per other reviews. Very happy. Takes a bit of adjusting so you don’t take too much wood off, but adjustment is fairly easy.

Set it up!Mine came pretty flat.Once I sharpened it and got it set up I was pleased.I bought it to sort out all the framing needs on a house renovation and it’s been great. I would buy it again if I needed another block plane

This was a gift for my son in law and he was delighted!

Great little plane. Has had a lot of use fitting doors in my properly and taking sharp edges off wood for shelves and my shed build. Comes sharp enough to use and havent had to re sharpen the blade yet after fitting 4 doors and numerous meters of edging. You can see the size is just larger than palm size in the picture compared to my chisels. The blade and mouth adjustments are both very easy and if kept oiled should give you no trouble for the life of the plane. It also came in a rather attractive felt lined wooden box which has saved the blade from any dings it most likely would have gotten if it was loose in my tool bag.Very pleased, would buy again and also would consider buying more Faithfull products.

This is a well put together little plane at a sensible price but with top performance. Perhaps by paying top money you can get something just the same but it is not going to do the job any better or be better built. A really good little plane well worth buying. (following Added April 2013). I have now had this plane for some time and used it a lot. It really is a brilliant little plane and has become one of my favorite tools. So handy to use, produces excellent results and with a blade which keeps its edge for a very long time. It would be impressive at any price.
Mr. A. W. Fraser –
The wooden box is a nice touch! The plane is one I have wanted for a long time, but I’ve been put off by the expense – as it its use will only be occasional. I’m not a full time joiner. However, this company is producing good quality tools at very reasonable prices. I have now used the plane and can say that I am very pleased with it, indeed. I’ll certainly consider Faithfull the next time I’m looking for tools.
