A super spirit level from Amazon basics. One day, I was gowned up in theatre, assisting the consultant with a surgical procedure. I received a frantic call from the nurse on the ward, a patient’s blood sugar had dropped to dangerous levels. She’d used the meter and the alarming figures were flashing up on the digital display. I raced out of theatre and went to the ward to find the patient sat up in bed. The nurse had incorrectly calibrated the meter but assumed because it was digital it must be accurate. I showed her the strip and matched its colour along the side of the bottle. This showed that the patient’s blood sugar was fine. I sent off a sample of his blood to the lab to be certain. Since that time, I’ve been a bit suspicious of the digital readout. Just because the reading of whatever is displayed complete with decimal point in big bold digits doesn’t mean it’s accurate.Enter this wonderful manual (analogue?) spirit level which is just up my street. It needs no batteries and there are no fancy lasers or bells and whistles. Just a few nice bubbles showing horizontal, vertical and 45. It is perfect for the relatively unskilled DIY-er like me. It’s a nice 24” or 600mm and this is perfect for the sorts of things I attempt like curtain rails, shelving and rails for blinds. All of these things it is perfect for. It has a nice aluminium housing which is true, light and yet is rugged enough to protect the more delicate bubbles within. The smooth finish means that it is easy to keep clean and though I couldn’t contemplate laying bricks, I am sure it would be easy to keep it clean and tidy against stray bits of mortar.Duncurin has been tidying the church grounds and doing a bit of planting. The beds that were overgrown have been cleared and I have done my best to clear, weed, replant and to repair the trampled Victorian edging stones. In order to do this, I have cut two shattered ones and glued the straight edges together to make ‘whole’ pieces again – albeit of varying lengths! This has worked well and I have then replaced the edging stones to, once again, create a tidy and straight border. I used a length of string between two pegs to try to get them straight and also did my best to get them level. The satisfaction when one places the lovely mechanical spirit level on a row of edging stones and the bubble centres knows no bounds. Although this is a humble device it is perfect for keeping on the straight and narrow and long may this be so. I hate anything hanging on the wall if it’s not straight. I’m talking about pictures and shelves. The trouble is are eyes are not a good guide and it’s possible to have arguments with other people whether things are level or not. This level from Amazon was just the answer. It’s a bit of an overkill for the job and I’m sure others would have better usages for it. I’m not into building walls and the like!This level is just under two-foot-long and made from an aluminium alloy which makes it nice and light. It has the usual three bubble tubes. One for horizontal, one for vertical and one for 45°. They all seem to be bang on when tested against known levels. It’s surprising how many levels aren’t all that accurate. We depend on them being right.A quick and dirty way to check a level is to place it on a flat surface, note the position of the bubble. Now turn the whole level around 180° and check if the position of the bubble is the same. That way it doesn’t matter if the surface you’re on is perfectly level.The finish of the level is nice. It has yellow paint on the sides which is quite attractive. Two-handle grips make it easy to hold. The rubber ends have a hole for hanging the level up. Along the bottom of the level there a few magnets.Overall, there is nothing to dislike about this level and it’s fairly priced. Hope that helps.

This level is made with a very substantial aluminium extruded section. I was surprised with how hefty it is – certainly more than expected.I cannot comment on the accuracy – I have no way to assess this.It has big rubber bumpers on each end with hanging loops, and large rubber edged hand holes. The three bubbles are preset and not adjustable.The finish seems to be paint, not powder coat.The magnets are easily strong enough to stick the level upside down on even light, and uneven, steel section without it dropping off.I rather like it.It’s not the sort of thing a tradesman would show up on site with – I think the Amazon brand might not convince a customer, but for a guy like me who just wants an occasional use level for around the house, it’s perfect.

Another good Amazon Basics product here. This is a neat spirit level and it measures 60.9cm and it has three easy to read vials of liquid to show the measuring bubbles. It is very accurate and easy to read. Made from an aluminium alloy and is magnetic which makes it ideal when working hands-free with steel, etc. Easy to use and looks good, too. I am impressed with the quality. This size is great for most jobs when a good level of accuracy is required.This should last for years to come.

Like many Amazon so-called ‘basic’ items thi is in fact a high quality product equal to to the more established brands and in some ways possibly better ( though roughly the same price in some cases). The level is strong, magnetic and easy to place/position. The levels are easy to sea and read and of course accurate. It seems well made and should withstand a lot of day to day/commercial or home use. In conclusion there’s little t between this level and the established market leader at ariund the same price point, but some may prefer the design and extra grip features with this model (as I do).Recommended.

This is a really sturdy and well made spirit level. The weight is good, not too heavy but not so light that it feels poor quality either. Just right and is very tactile to hold. We found the measure to be very accurate and will be using many more times Im sure. I would definitely recommend this as its a good quality and very easy to use.

This traditionally styled spirit level is 60cm long (24 inches) with vertical, horizontal and 45 degree spirits. There are knurled had grips either side of centre but the most unusual thing is the magnetic aspect. This came in handy recently when I was installing a metal gate and wanted to make sure it was perfectly vertical. The level attached to one strut of the gate and remained there while I adjusted it. Very handy!
