Drill arrived ahead of schedule. Well packaged. This item is very heavy – 44Kg in the description is accurate. Very easy to assemble. Well written handbook included. This is a big pillar drill, over 1m tall as described. The quill is smooth to operate and shows no play in any direction. The chuck supplied is surprisingly smooth and accurately centred. The MT2 quill allows other chucks and MT2 tapered drills to easily be interchanged. The table left/right tilt was very accurately pre-set. The table front to back is also accurately perpendicular to the quill. The motor is smooth and provides plenty of power. Speed changing and belt tensioning is very simple with the external tensioning lever and locks. Table up/down adjustment is very smooth through a very simple but effective ‘floating’ rack allowing the table to be rotated about the pillar. Once locked, this is very secure. The table itself can be rotated about its centre through a simple, easily accessed lock. I’ve been drilling through stainless steel bar. Every hole has been dead straight – testament to the near perfect alignment of drill and table. I’ve not used the depth gauge/ depth stop yet, but the scale looks spot on against a ruler. If you’re looking for a large benchtop pillar drill, I don’t think you will find better value for money than this.

The drill assembled extremely easily, the chuck is as it should be and an interference fit on a tapered spindle. There are no worrying wobbles or noises from any bearings. Table is flat and true. This was given to me as a birthday present and I’m so happy this make and model were picked. For me the perfect size maybe small for some. My first trial was a 13mm hole into hardwood. Drilled straight and true

Not having much room, and only needing it for occasional use, I have found this drill to be ideal for my needs. Putting it together was straightforward until I came to the safety guard which was the first time I needed to consult the instructions. Sadly the book was not much help, which is why I knocked a star off the ease of assembly. Watching a couple of Youtube videos showing the unboxing and assembly it appears I was not alone. But this is only a very minor niggle. It is easy to use and reasonably quiet. All in all I like this drill a lot.

Just right for the job

Arrived with a damaged box but was not damaged. The base had a small amount of rock so i sanded the base on a flat glass plate with sanding paper glued to it. Once sanded it was dead flat so i assemble thr other items cleaning the excess packing grease off with a rag. Its easier to fit the chuck before you fit the motor unit as the motor usit sits flat with the spindle shaft pointing up giving perfect access. Clean the spindle and chuck carefully then twist the chuck onto the spindle and give it a couple of good taps with a rubber mallet of place a piece of wood ontop of the chuck if you have a regular hammer. Then fit it all together set required speed with the belt and then tyrap around the belt cover and the housing as this stops any vibrations and noise. Runs very quiet and very true. Im only using it for light woodworking and the test holes cut very nicely. For the money im very impressed once it was flattened and built correctly. Those were my first impressions…. After 24 hours lowering the quill sounded like a grinding metal sound and i was able to stop the chuck from spinning with my hand.. It got sent back. I bought the bosch PBD40 instead which is a whole different animal.

Good tool and fairly accurate, if I needed another I would buy again.

Let’s start with the one little niggle, the packaging! It comes in a lovely box but when opening said box you are faced with two, tight fitting, polystyrene trays that have no finger holes or anything else to grab. The best way would probably be to cut (or tear) the sides of the box, but if you need to send it back for some reason then that is not ideal. My solution was to carefully tip the box over and let gravity take over, lo and behold the underside of one tray had a place to put your fingers in……perhaps I should have opened the box upside down!Assembly was a doddle, the instructions were very clear, concise and easy to follow with just a 13mm spanner extra to the two Allen keys provided; the table angle adjustment needs an 18mm spanner. Not having had one of these previously, I can’t say whether it is excessively noisy or not but as I have always used an electric drill on a stand before this is a lot quieter than that! The speeds are easy to change too.All in all this seems a good machine that is easy to operate and not too heavy to move around.

I enjoy DIY stuff, certainly working with wood and a little engineering. I wanted something which ‘guaranteed’ a 90° or more accurate drilling. This brilliant machine does all I could ask for and more. I would recommend it to anyone who loves ‘tinkering’.

This was easy to assemble and was well packaged for transit. It has only been used for wood but performs well on hard wood to the maximum depth of 50mm as advertised. It runs true. Changing drill speed is an easy task, as is adjusting the table height to suit the material. My only gripe is with the vice bundled with this by Amazon, it doesn’t line up with any of the slots on the table. Although the vice is well made and sold by Silverline, you need separate clamps to hold it in place, which rather defeats the whole idea. Vice excepted I would recommend the drill for hobby work although of limited use for anything heavier.
