great value quality tenon saw, British made, (Sheffield), can be resharpened, heavy brass spine, handle might not be to everyones liking but at least its wood, and the saw itself is pretty sharp out the box. handle held by brass screws so can be removed and modified easily.
JBareleycorn –
This is a good saw, well constructed out of good materials. While it is sharp out of the box, the kerf is 0.044″ wide and the saw plate is 0.025″ thick, that means a saw kerf of 0.019″. Too wide and hard to start for its intended use. I’ve done some initial fettling by putting 1″ masking tape on the blade just a hair above the gullets of the teeth and honing the sides of its 13 teeth per inch with 6 light, even passes while holding it flat to my1,000 grit diamond sharpening plate and reducing the kerf to 0.042″. while better, I’m either going to have to flatten the kerf and reset (and, if going that far, resharpen at the same time), or go back to the aforementioned diamond plate method starting with a 350 grit for three passes, then, depending on the results, either 600 then1,000 grit or just the 1,000 grit plate(s) to finish. LikeI said, its a good saw that needs just a little tender, loving fettling.
