H. Chandler –
I am in the USA and purchased this saw from Amazon UK because the price was a fraction of what it would be in the USA. Shipping was inexpensive and prompt. The saw cut fast and straight when I received it, but I reduced the set slightly to narrow the kerf and for my purposes this helps me better maintain a straight cut. The brass back is quite substantial and the weight seems just right to aid in cutting. The handle is tight and of a good size for my average size hand and well angled for me as I believe it would be for most people. The handle might be reshaped slightly for personal comfort. I plan to relieve the edges of mine slightly, but this is a matter of personal preference. I believe this saw is a very good tool as it comes, but I am also pleased that it allows one to fine tune it to meet one’s own needs or preferences. I am finding it very satisfying to use and an excellent value.

I have been using what can only be described as ‘cheap’ saws for as long as I can remember. Now I have ben asked to produce a couple of rather better quality items, so I thought I should upgrade my tools a little bit to ensure a fine finish. This saw is lovely. The weight of the brass top edge ensure there is sufficient pressure on the cut with almost no effort from the person sawing. The cut itself is clean and sharp edged, with very little finishing required. It has a very fine kerf, too, so I am hoping the joints I will have to cut will be a neat, snug fit.Not the cheapest saw in the world but worth the extra money to get such a nice piece of kit in the workshop.I keep this one hanging on the workshop wall rather than chucking it into my toolbar with all the cheapies!

I’ve bought his to replace an old, 10 inch, steel backed tenon saw I have had for nearly 50 years, and which has given a lifetime of faithful service. The new one arrived today and looks and feels superb. The handle is big enough for me to hold the saw easly, whilst having ample room for someone with larger hands to use it. The blade and teeth are straight and well set, and the brass back adds enough weight to allow it to cut without having to put on anymore pressure, enabling straight, fine cutting. The extra length, and 15 points per inch, also enables less effort to be used. As you would expect from a Spear and Jackson tool of this nature, the finish is excellent, and with care will provide a lifetimes use. If you are considering buying a tenon saw, forget the cheap ones you get from the DIY stores and go for one of these, believe me, in the long run it is a purchase you will not regret.
Big Teddy –
A great saw at an economical price. With its brass back, this is a weighty saw which feels far more solid and professional than the tradesmans tools you get in the DIY stores.Conventional teeth, rather than the Japanese style tooth, gives a smooth and accurate cut. A basic handle which is perfectly comfortable, but not decorative as you may get on a more expensive saw.The blade arrives with some sort of lacquer to prevent rust, and this is best removed with paint thinner and wire wool to prevent the saw grabbing in the cut. A little candle wax rubbed lightly on the blade also makes it run more easily.
Mr A R Haddock –
the blade is covered with a lacquer which I found I needed to remove with some spirits before I could get the best out of a saw. Be careful if you do this as the blade will rust. I don’t have the biggest hands that but I found the handle to be a tiny bit small but very very easy to cope with as I don’t use it for too long at one time. for the money it’s a very good saw as it can be sharpened and could possibly be a generational tool however I don’t see myself having this down to my children.
Fraser –
i purchased this saw to replace the one i purchased in the 1980’s and have to this day. Excellent quality and expect this one to last me just as long. The wooden handle is slightly less comfortable than the modern plastic handles with rubber grips. There are numerous comments about the handle being small but i suspect this is because traditionally a tenon saw was held with a ‘pistol’ grip with the index finger pointing forward along the blade of the saw and only three fingers through the hole in the handle. If held in this way the handle is fine.
Jev Jango –
A lovely saw, very rigid which is what you want for a tenon saw. Feels weighty and precise, but is not cumbersome and heavy. Glides through the wood. It really does have an old fashioned quality about it. I feel like a cabinet maker with this saw. Bottom line, I am glad I bought this one and not one of the cheaper ones, which I nearly did.
Jason dyer –
All good thank you
alistair beattie –
I bought this on the back of other reviews. What struck me a lot was that others were mentioning how wonderful the grip was in their hands and how much room there was for someone with bigger hands. My hands are small and there’s not that much space. That is my only caution for others about this saw. It’s wonderfully sharp, might need some setting up depending on your needs. This is the first “Proper” new saw I’ve owned and I don’t regret the money spent. Nice weight and balance, easy to get back on track if you wander from your line Even on a cheap laminated door it made a nice cut with little tearing and chipping of the material.Absolute pleasure to use – though I might fit a slightly larger handle.
Brian Farrell –
Much better than cheaper saws I’ve used. Cuts much more accurately
