This is the first Japanese plane I’ve owned and after learning how to tune it up and properly sharpen it, it’s a joy to use. Lighter and more nimble than my Stanley block plane, I like to keep it in my apron for breaking corners and tuning fits. It’s crazy simple to use, elegant and minimalist and it certainly won’t be my last!

I’m a Scoutmaster. Every year I turn 11 year olds loose with a $90 piece of western red cedar to make Greenland kayak paddles. Some of them are quater sawn boards that cut pretty easily. Some, like the one pictured, are not. This year I bought three of the Japanese pull planes. They worked so much better on all paddles.! They are easier to adjust, they are lighter and easier to handle. The cut angle is set and just works. We also had plenty of traditional push planes. Our adults, accomplished wood workers, spent so much time adjusting planes it was ridiculous when compared to the ease of use of the pull planes. My push planes are now simply on display. The tools I will use are these pull planes.

have been reading about Japanese hand planes for years. I decided to try it and I am very impressed with how much better it is compared to pushing a hand plane. Well worth it.

Take the time to carefully set the blade. The instructions were decent enough to get me, a carpentry newbie, properly set up within 30 min. The blade is very sharp and easily shaves the wood. I actually like this better than my electric handheld planer! Extremely happy with this product.
